Mealworms

Mealworms are the larvae of the flour beetle, an insect native to Britain, and are 48% protein and 40% fat, making them an excellent food for birds. Since their diet is vegetarian they are especially safe, unlike maggots which can pass on diseases. They will be appreciated by many species throughout the year and especially during the nesting season for adult birds to feed their young.
Serve a few dozen at a time, from a shallow, steep-sided dish covered from the rain.
